Emerald Eyes

by Kurt   Jan 3, 2017

Twelve years ago on a day unknown
I fled the city where I had grown
Panicked over a woman I had kissed
During an unfaithful moonlight tryst
Though memories fade, sifting through my fingers
The sweet taste of our affair still lingers

Furrowed brows betray my furtive mind
Contemplating the marriage I undermined
False justifications try to calm my nerves,
"Her lousy lover got what he deserved!"
Yet no false excuse will halt the tide
And my guilt will haunt me until I die

"Oh child why are you so scared?"
A heavenly voice drifted through the air,
"Find comfort in my gentle embrace"
"And I shall take you from this earthly place."
The siren's touch is soothing as a winter slumber
Keeping me enthralled as the ship is torn asunder

Ensorceled still; into the depths I sink
Until my circles of vision begin to shrink
The mimic guides me effortlessly to shore
Whereupon I discover a face I had seen before!
An echo of a mistress was the siren's disguise
With her same crimson hair and her emerald eyes.

Oh as Ben said this is indeed quite chilling...your rhyming is great and it flowed really well. I find it hauntingly elegant. A really wonderful piece.

    Kurt,

How lovely to see a really well written rhyming poem on here.
As you know from reading my piece, I am a fan of this type of poetry. This has everything - a story, rhythm, rhyme and it kept me enthralled until the very end. Quite a chilling little piece that I enjoyed thoroughly.

    All the very best,

    Ben
