It brought home to me
it takes a village
to raise a child
even in the bird kingdom
the cries of terror
from the nest of fledglings
cowering before the onslaught
of a murderous crow
attracted help from other bird species
with flimflam dive bombs and angry screeches
the birds chased off the hungry crow
sadly next day the nest was empty
as sparse as Christ's crown of thorns,
the chicks are dead.
