a house of wood and stone

by yogi73   Feb 28, 2017

along dark and winding forest road
stood a decaying house of wood and stone.
Solemn and hidden among dense evergreen
stopping by, I ponder its obscurity

How I arrived across the pasture I don't know,
To stand before such a house. An antiquity
of wood and stone, shrugged in mossy rocks
and rotted timbers all in stately poverty

I want to see ghosts hiding behind and
darting amongst the forest pines.
I want to see my soul, as these are things
I fear as I grow old and face the divine

The peaceful house of wood and stone whispers
for me to stand before, before a heavy
wooden door. Inscribed with an upside-down tree,
roots skyward, inscribed in a deep and heavy score

I pause and wonder what lies beyond,
beyond the barrier door. I touch
the cold wrought iron latch and i
listen and wait, waiting for something more

With a mighty heave the door scrapes
open a fissure. I am haunted by the darkness
inside and of cold and rotted visions.
Panic invades, I feel the light closing behind

I step back from the upside-down door and the
lightlessness that pulls me inside, I turn
back from the house of wood and stone,
unready for whispers and ghosts

Eerie! Goosebumps. I wouldn't come near the door by any chance.

This is such a mysterious and eerie piece...with a slight sense of fear for the unknown yet a little excitment in anticipation for what could be wandering inside that house. The imagery you depict is amazing. You paint such a vivid picture and the reader can truly imagine and see that rotting house made of wood and stone and the mystifying essence surrounding it.

    Excellent work!

How you set the mood of the setting is beyond amazing. I felt the mystery, and the feeling of haunt as I was reading to the end. This piece is full of imagery, and metaphors that are introspective, I have to re-read some part so I could try to get it... and I wish I did. This piece made me feel and think. I love it.

I like the narration and it gives that eerie, mysterious yet a longing
feel which holds many memories. Nicely penned and I like the descriptions/
