Room Full of Close Strangers

by Alex Penuelas   May 8, 2017

Doesn't it feel weird
To be in a large group
Of people that
You should know very well,
But all you
Know about each other
Is nothing more
Than that which is
On the surface?

I stand here alongside
Many friends and family members,
And yet I hardly know
Anything more other than
Their names and their professions.

I can't really have
Any conversations with anyone
That don't go any further than:

"What's your name?
How's it going?
Where do you work now?
You got a girlfriend now?
What do you think about X event?
Well, nice seeing you again".

It never goes any deeper.
Everybody here is just
Mildly concerned about my situations,
Mildly enough where it is socially acceptable,
But not enough where
They can truly understand one another.

I get that we
All put on our
Daily masks and façades,
But damn it,
I'm sick of being in a
Room Full of Close Strangers.
