The Sweet Escape

by mossgirl19   Jun 23, 2017

Nocturnal eyes lurking behind the tree
A curious gaze awaiting in silence
Mindful of it; but obliviously
Denies the weight of its haunting presence.

The clock of old chimes another minute
The gaze unmoved, the prying eyes burn her
They tear her, until they slowly win it
She breathes heavily, feebly surrenders.

She, against the will of her cultured mind
Leaves the safety of a right tomorrow
Runs to the woods to meet his poignant eyes
Forever bid farewell to their sorrows.

“If love’s a gamble we have gambled thus,
The world now found worthy because of us.”

Mel, this is genuinely excellent and incorporates some wonderful half-rhymes throughout which, in my opinion, are the secret to great rhyming poetry as they help stop the piece sounding forced.

Well done and all the best,

    Ben
