I saw you the other day

by Sai   Jun 30, 2017

Or at least someone
who looks like you /

reminded me of you.
Maybe you saw me too.

Neither of us did anything.

How can you be so close
to someone yet feel so far away?
There's a mountain between us

that exists only in my mind.
I dream of climbing it
only to reach the top to see

you're not on the other side after all.

Imagine if I wasn't this coward girl,
we could be shouting our mediocre poetry
to the heavens right now,

over the maudlin lullabies of humming
bird fingers on milky keys;

indecisive whether to blame
our own drunkenness to empty bottles or
perhaps to fluttering hearts.

Imagine being something other than lonely.

The title is a reference to "I Saw Daddy Today" by Yann Tiersen, isn't it?

I'm going to dissect (well more like poke with a stick) a couple of stanzas because they are beautiful:

"over the maudlin lullabies of humming
    bird fingers on milky keys"

beautiful imagery, which is also why I thought of yann tiersen's piece played a role in this poem, whether it inspired the title or the poem itself. I keep saying these words over and over again in awe, I'm envious I didn't write it first.

    "indecisive whether to blame
our own drunkenness to empty bottles or
    perhaps to fluttering hearts."

I think this very well might be the crux of the poem, and it's packaged in such a dense emotion-filled stanza.

"Imagine being something other than lonely."

What a haunting line to end this poem on, you've perfectly summed up your entire piece beautifully!

I wish it were. I haven't heard that piece yet, but I'll look it up. Thanks so much :)
