The Drums

by Mark Rawlins   Jul 11, 2017

Here come
the drums
the drums
the drums
the drums
that beat
for me.
Here comes
the thing
the thing
it comes
the thing
I cannot see.

Here comes
the dog
to snarl
and bark
while I'm
awake
in bed.
Here comes
the dark
the dark
the dark
the darkness
in my head

Out go
the lights
here come
the nights
here come
the monster
dreams.
Here come
the sweats
here come
the frights
here come
the shakes
and screams.

Here comes
the thumping
bumping grind.
Here comes
the beat
again.
It beats
and pounds
inside
my mind
and echos
in my pain.

Now here's
the numbness
here's the void
the emptiness
inside.
The void
the void
I can't
avoid
to crawl
inside
and hide.

Here comes
the thing
the thing
it comes
while I'm
awake
in bed.
Here come
the drums.
Here come
the drums
the drums
inside
my head.

Judging comments: This is different and eccentric and special. Honestly, whilst reading this I felt a touch of Shel Silverstein, and brought me back to my childhood reading his stories and poetry. Very powerful and full of impact!

Yay, glad that this is nominated too. I love this very much. I love the build up as Milly had mentioned, and the rhymes, the upbeat rhythm yet again.

Mark I have to admit at first I was a little put off with the short sharp lines so I came back and re-read and I have to say I'm glad that I did because I fell in love with it and I'm glad that it's been nominated.

    All the best
    Em
