Burnt Toast

by Maple Tree   Jul 17, 2017

It was just another day in paradise -

My thoughts were kept hidden
as I smiled peacefully to the strangers,
claiming to know who I was.

Sheltered within silence,
I drank my coffee while I watched
the toast burn.

So many times, my feet have begged me
to walk out that door, never to return...

I've done that in the past; lighting a cigarette
never looking back, just run away-
but you walk into the room
with a smile only for me,
your eyes tell me you love me.

I've never known security before you
so I filter my shiny pen between my fingers,
and I write to myself,
why I'll never leave you....

The old me walked out that door
and the new me sips her coffee, smiling;
burnt toast never tasted so good until now.

Andrea, you really have a way with words...another heart-touching poem! And the message...it speaks a lot...for me. Walking out the door is like walking out of life and choosing to hide instead of facing our problems. I like that you highlighted here that you have done it before, because I think we all did. We just come to a point where maturity thru experiences tell us that walking out is not an option anymore. The last stanza is just amazing! Really beautiful write, Ms. Andi.
