Salt and Pepper

by mossgirl19   Aug 12, 2017

Nostalgia is bittersweet
But when I savor today
I’ll have bits of it
For the hunger in me
Is fulfilled only when
I have a taste of that feeling.

It seasons me
Like salt, rubbing against
My present
Loving how the past
Flavored me
Portions of pepper
Spiced me up.
Too much sometimes.

I am not in the menu
of success stories
And it’s bland to think
I can be the best-seller
With what I am now
But deep within my skin
Are lessons learned.

I will be content
Being served today
But the taste of the past
Is something I cannot
Remove from my tongue.
My tomorrows
Will be brushed the
sweet and sour sauces
Dripped from
Yesterday.

I am, after all
A recipe-
Made better
every now and then.

    Nice Analogy.
It connects you from the very first line of the poem and from there with every stanza, it's just got better and better. And what an ending.
    I am, after all
    A recipe-
    Made better
    every now and then.

In the third stanza you mentioned lessons are learned and those lessons helped you to make yourself a better person.

    Astounding work!

A very intriguing piece. It had a real sense of maturity to it. A sense of character. Someone that has experience life, and has a good sense of who they are. The Last line of the second stanza especially was powerful yet simple. Aided of course by the entire stanza before it, but it was a wonderful climax. Topping, you might say.
