Knives are not the only blades...

by Kitty Cat Lady   Sep 13, 2017

Even after all this time
You don't know what you want
Look behind you, catch a glimpse
Nothing but heart corpses lay in your wake

Is the grass really greener over there?
Or is it painted that way for your benefit?
To be washed away with the first storm
Revealing the worn parts that need re-seeding

Will you bother to do the gardening then?
Or will you find a new shiny strip of astroturf
Never needing your attention
No nurturing required

But you'll be able to admire it
To feel the envy of your friends
You can lay upon it unencumbered
No maintenance worries have you

Until the day you notice the small patch
Faded by the sun
Time to find a new lawn
The death count rises.

**inspired by the first two lines of the first verse of Cutting Crew's 'Died in your arms tonight' which I heard on the radio this morning**

Firstly, that song is amazing - makes me go cold whenever I hear it. Secondly, I love your use of metaphor throughout this piece; excellent work indeed.
I have to say, for someone who doesn't write much free verse, you do so with imagination and an entirely palpable air of scathing menace in this. I can quite literally feel the disharmony and contempt seething through the page as I read.

    Well done, Kitty,

Thanks Ben :-) I keep meaning to try more free verse, but the rhyming stuff flows far easier ... I must apply myself! lol x
