I'M FINE!

by Kitty Cat Lady   Sep 18, 2017

I feel like a slave to this lonely beat
The one I keep playing, a tune on repeat
It's the song of my heavy heart that I sing
Every note perfect, the familiar ring

You know that I'm not, but ask if I'm OK
And each time I answer, the same thing I'll say
I'll tell you I'm good, reply that I'm fine
Over and over, rehearsed all the time

For if I was honest and told you what's wrong
We'll get in a quarrel, you'll go on and on
Far easier for me to allow you to think
That nothing has changed, I'm not on the brink

But the record of us is worn out and scratched
The damage too great, I can't reverse back
You and I just became stuck on this loop
And I'm just so weary of jumping through hoops

If I answered you honestly, I'd tell you I'm blue
And you know deep down that what I say is true
But you want to save face, prefer to pretend
Kid yourself thinking that it's not the end

If you don't want the truth, just ask if I'm fine
I promise to keep lying, I'll say the same line
I'll keep on smiling and you pretend you can't tell
But you and I both know, this is living hell.

I like how this can be interpreted in different ways. The first read though reminded me of the end of my marriage. But then as I read again I started to feel like this represented how my mother and I ignored my depression as a teenager and pretended our relationship wasn't dying.
It's really nice to read something that invokes an emotional response.
    Great write

This was me for a long time, but eventually I had to say enough was enough. Very well written, kudos.

Thanks so much Matt, I too reached the 'enough!' stage. Feels like a lifetime ago when I was in this situation and wrote this poem :-) x

Very very good write, pretending is so often easier then just being open when both knows the truth. Sometimes feelings just die. Who knows why. Maybe it’s no ones fault maybe it’s life, maybe one quit trying. When we know the truth for certain there is no denying it. I love the poem.
