Then, Still, Always Have, Always Will

by Matt Carroll   Oct 4, 2017

The quiver in your voice, the tears streaming from your eyes
The sorrow in your broken heart, the fear within your cries
The pain that your plight brings me, to see you so distraught
For you I weep, it cuts so deep, these cruel lessons life has taught

I couldn't help but love you then, can't help but love you still
In some ways, I simply always have, I'm sure I always will
You carry with you such a big piece of my lonely, broken heart
I call for you in my dreams, it seems, and curse every moment we're apart

I long to hold you in my arms again, your lips pressing against mine
Promising you all of me and that we'll be just fine
I recall, not all that long ago, we couldn't bear fives minutes without talking
Making time in each day...hoping that you'd say, fate gifted us this path we're walking

In the time we spent together, I found something unlike I've ever known
The distance in between us these past months has only grown
I dearly miss all that we were, and all we could've been
I pray each and every day...come whatever may...we find ourselves there again

I loved you then, I love you still, always have, always will
I'm here for you through thick and thin, your cup I'll always fill
You never need to worry, I'm always right here by your side
And within me, I hope you see...a safe place to rest and to confide
