Empire of Dirt

by CJ Maleney   Oct 8, 2017

What a life for you to have
What a life to live and lead
You had us mortals dream of things
But your vein it still did bleed

I've known you since my childhood
My mother played your movies and songs
I still tag them into life sometimes
Quite often sing along

Your time is depleted and burned out
All you built is burned to waste
I hear the message in your song
That must leave a bitter taste

Genius of lyrics and flow you were
With that gravel enriched voice
You succumbed to the lifestyle
Not once or twice but lots.

You played the cards and gambled
You enjoyed the buzz and fame.
The empire of dirt of which you sing
Was always yours to claim

It's a simple path of reminisce
To see where you went wrong
As your time draws to a close
You write your epitaph song

I know you had your problems
They have been written over time
We have all had our own problems too
I guess we walk the line.

In my own way this is a little tribute to Johnny Cash.

      Thanks Michael.

Yes we all walk our line and sometimes it ain't as straight as we would like, so long as we get there in the end I guess.

I've not seen that. The clip of it I seen was him sitting on his porch looking very old and frail.

Considering what he got up to if had a bloody good innings.

Craig, I love Johnny Cash and so I couldn't help but like this. A sad sort of life he lead in many ways and one riddled with pain and destruction, not just for himself but those around him. There are always those few, I guess, who walk the line...
    This is excellent.

    All the best as ever.

      An axe to grind
      A clip of time
      One taste of something sublime

We all still walk our line

What a lovely tribute. I think if he read it he would be touched. My mother used to listen to him too and Roy Orbison. There's something about the quality of their songs and lyrics that endure through the sands of time Milly x

The orb rocked. Not everyone's thing and not really mine. Yet sometimes he could nail it down
