The Beauty Of War (trafalgar poem)

by CJ Maleney   Oct 23, 2017

Come grab yourself a bollard boy
And I'll spin you a dit
You came here not for company
Not to watch or just to sit

You came here to enlist my lad
For a life upon those waves
But the sea is not your friend my lad
It's a cold and murky grave

So prick your ears and listen in
And I'll tell you much more
A time of valour, of honor and fear

!And the beauty that is war!

For we are the Heros of this tale
As unsung as we are
The Heros the villains the victims
Of the battle of trafalgar

We were on those ships my lad
Me and those men behind
Jacob has but one foot
And issacc he be blind

For my part I only lost
The fingers of one hand
But it did not stop the fighting
Stop fighting ye be dammed

27 ships of ours and 33 of them
18 of their ships were lost
But we lost not a one

But cannon balls hit
And splinters flew
Like Spears they filled the air
They found their mark both man and boy
No discretion and no care

The battle won, the shouts went up
Hussar hussar Hussar
But the screams of the dead and dying
Carried louder and carried far

500 souls both man and boy
We sent into the deep
A light snubbed out a life turned off
Just a memory to keep

Now listen to my words my lad
Before the seas you'll roam
Spare a thought and spare a care
For the ones you leave back home

Yes we finally read this one. It's very brilliantly written, Craig. Such a powerful message, your colleaugues must be very proud as you read this aloud to them. With a musical background, wow.

    You are a hero!

Thank you but I'm certainly no hero just an average bloke who's capable of some monumental errors.

It certainly is beautiful Craig, and I'm glad you've been able to share it at last. Sounds like it was a big deal so well done writing it, and reading it out at the remembrance dinner. I'm sure they'll certainly remember that! x

      Thank you.

I think it went down pretty ok.

    Authors note.

    Finally I can post this!

I had to read this on Saturday evening at our Trafalgar remembrance dinner. The version you see here is slightly different. (Larry thank you for your help with edits) As the paper script was misplaced (there was lots of port ;-) ).

It was read with sound bites of the dockyard, sea and battle sounds playing in the background.

Was pretty Dam cool if I do say so myself.

Never done a speech or spoke in public before so yes. I was bricking it.

I realise the tittle is a total contradiction but anyone who's been in the forces (regardless of which arm or for how long) will agree there is a certain weird bond we share.

    It's kinda beautiful
