Like a Reflex

by mossgirl19   Oct 26, 2017

Like a reflex, my eyes would gaze at the moon at night,
Because like a reflex, my mind is lost in a time and space
only understood by you and me.

Like a reflex, my thoughts would drift
on the nights you made little tulips out of the moonlight
and adorned my heart with it;
or on all of the nights we would stare
at the cascading waters illuminated by the moon,
Like a reflex, the memory of these would carve a smile in me.

Like a reflex, my mind would wonder
if the moon over there somehow reminded you of me-
if somehow it made your heartbeat long for mine
If somehow a part of you would only be fulfilled by my presence.

Ah, yes, like a reflex my heart would scream
I love you, I love you, I love you
…because it’s the truth.

I guess you are right in saying
I am only a poet living in many clichés,
overusing these words, these phrases,

because all I can do now is but repeat myself…
Like a reflex.

While I am definitely not a fan of the repetition (it was a little too bland to really get at the heart of where you were going in my opinion) at the beginning of so many stanzas I think this is still a decently penned poem and I wish you well in the weekly contest.
