Bruises

by Matt Carroll   Oct 31, 2017

He tells you that he's sorry
You just made him so upset
He begs you not to leave him
Says every bruise, he does regret

He tells you it was just this once
And never meant to hurt you so
That next time will be different
If you'll just promise not to go

He tells you that he loves you
Like no one else ever could
That you're broken, that how only he
Could love, treat you this good

But I am here to tell you, honey
His words are hollow, wrought with lies
There's no such thing as 'just this once'
He finds strength and power in your cries

And i'm here to tell you, darling
He falls far short of the title 'a real man'
For you belong high up on a pedestal
Beyond his reach, stripped from his plan

And I'm here, to tell you, dear
If you'd let me take you by the hand
I'd show you love, peace, joy, and laughter
Like you've never dreamed, but I've had planned

A wonderful piece that comes with a sad statement, but you ended this piece on a positive note.

Oh Matt you did cover it all, really :-) I think I was just trying to make the point that because of the mental abuse too, it makes it that much harder for the victim to actually leave. You nailed it! :-) x

Matt! This is brilliant! I used to work in a women's refuge and saw some pretty shocking things. For many women (and men) the mental abuse is as bad as the physical and their resolve is all but erased by the perpetrators.
You're right, real and good men don't ever do this. An amazing poem. Really well done! :-) x

      Thank you so much.
I tried to touch on the emotional/verbal (mental) abuse in this, but the overtones I see now are predominantly physical. Please know that I intended for every aspect to be included.
