A Mother...

by Maple Tree   Nov 1, 2017

A mother holds her dying child in her mind,
heart and soul.

She wakes each morning, but collapses
each time the phone rings,
oncologists never have good news
and her coffee burns her lips a bit more
these days.

People grant her compassion, support
but she sees the uncomfortable feeling
between them, what do you say to a woman
who could lose her daughter any day now?

She whispers nightly,
"Just make it to your 27th Birthday"
she begs for more days, months, years;

Because a mother will never stop wanting
to hug her child, even if she is 6 inches taller.

A mother becomes angry with life
because it's so damn unfair to watch
her daughter riddled with cancer....

Her eyes are almond shape,
chestnut brown hair,
and the sweetest laugh
she has ever heard...

A mother should not have
to say goodbye to such beauty.
