No Need To Be The Same

by Gwenyth Hill   Nov 15, 2017

What happens to society
When it hits a dead end
Does it keep fighting?
Or does it just bend?

To the will of those
Who assume they have power
Over the majority of us
Do we just hide and cower?

Beneath them
Let them take control
See, I don't think we do
Our lives are not sold

They should not affect us
We shouldn't have to change
Become something we're not
No need to be the same

Thought provoking piece. I think there is a lot to be learnt from our history. The atrocities of what happened to the Jews, the football match between British and German soldiers on Christmas day. You can make people do things that go against character when their lives are at risk but it is difficult to sustain. Given the opportunity people will follow their morale compasses. I see a lot of mean people who are rude and abusive to disabled people beyond believe because it is in their nature to be mean and self absorbed. I know myself if I was ordered to do something that I didn't want to do I would die first but if someone threatened the life of a loved one then I am not so sure. Your poem raises interesting thoughts. Best wishes Milly x
