The Bravest of Cowards

by Once an Angel   Dec 8, 2017

The bravest of cowards
is an addict.
Always more.

In the darkest alleys
and most unstable places -
under bridges,
and in broken houses,
bent over in the light
of downtown chaos,
draped across a bathroom stall,
wrapped in rubbish
and hopeless abandon,
you’ll find us.

Cowering there,
courageously seeking escape,
in the places no one else
dares to go, dares to stay.
Homeless in the shadows
of desperation,
bravely, we seek our cowardice.

This is profound. I'd never thought of it like this before. The need to feed the addiction overshadows thought of personal safety and drives addicts to places they wouldn't have dared venture before.
Not sure I agree with addiction being cowardice though. More a combination of circumstances and a lack of coping mechanisms.
    A brilliant write! :-) x

Thank you for reading! I appreciate your opinion. I think coming to grips with my addiction made me feel like I had been a coward to run away from my life in substances, but I see that here I put that feeling on addicts in general rather than just me. That might not be a fair thing for me to do. Thank you for your insight.
