I Learned

by ibelievedhim   Dec 19, 2017

Once we were lovers, and you had my heart
Once we were lovers, and you played your part

You had me believe that I was your soul mate
You had me believe that we could be great

We fell asleep a million miles from each other
We fell asleep promising not to hurt one another

You painted a picture of what seemed a beautiful life
You painted a picture, asking me to be your wife

I left it all; my family and friends are still back home
I left it all, but living with you I have never felt so alone

I loved you completely; you were everything to me
I loved you completely, but very soon I would see

I can never be good enough to be seen with you
I can never be good enough; none of it was true

All your words were lies, and your actions were too
All your words were lies, and I think that you knew

You knew you were using me for sex and money
You knew you were using me, yet called me honey

You hurt me on purpose and you destroyed my dreams
You hurt me on purpose not everything is what it seems

I learned from you never to trust any man again
I learned from you that not everyone is a friend
I learned from you how to hurt, and how to bleed
I learned from you that people take what they need

I learned from you that words can seem so real
I learned from you that I should try not to feel
I learned from you how to cry alone in the dark
I learned from you that men will leave marks

I learned from you how to be alert and aware
I learned from you the fear will always be there
I learned from you that most night I will cry
I learned from you how to curl up and die

Oh dear. Although love can be the most beautiful and life affirming emotion in the world, the flipside can be desperate. I suppose that's the balance - to have something so wonderful means that when it is lost, the effects are just as dramatic but in entirely the wrong way.
The content is sad to read but the poem is very well written and rhymed.

    All the best,

    Ben
