Hearing you say "I do"...

by Irina   Jul 10, 2004

I can't believe I'm standing here,
Hearing you say "I do"
And up there by the altar,
It's her. I'm not by you.

You take her hands,
And give that special kiss,
And it is her, not me,
Kissing your sweet lips.

You slip a ring on her hand,
That warm look on your face,
It could've been me,
Dressed up in white and lace.

You promise forever,
Till death do you part,
And my heart is hurting,
It's breaking apart.

I gather my strength,
I smile, hiding the pain,
To come up and say my congrats,
To wish for love to remain.

I say I'm happy for you,
I hope I mean it with my heart,
My first love is getting married,
But not with me his life will start.

All I can do is stay away,
Moving on with my life,
And letting you be,
With your lovely new wife.

I'll say: forever,
I'll say: I do,
Someday I'll find my happiness,
But not with you...

*thanks for reading this poem. It really happened to me...((But I am moving on.:)

Another great one. It happened to me as well... I don't know how many people actually get to marry their first love. You captured this experience very nicely.
