Love Kills

by MAINESTREAM   Jan 23, 2018

All I see is the red stain on her brightly flowered dress
as she leans down to kiss my cheek and whisper secrets in my ear

She speaks so faintly, her breath coming in short bursts

The storm outside nearly overpowers her murmurs

She speaks of love, faith, and things long past

The stain blooms into a rose, a shade of dark red

The rose grows bigger and bigger

Until it encompasses her whole side

The color of deep, rich red

All the while, her murmurs grow fainter until all I hear is the breath coming out of her mouth

Then she crumbles, falling into herself

The rose meets the floor and it travels along the sleek surface, meeting up with a smaller version of itself

A rose that blossomed from the upturned blade in my hand

I can no longer hear her breath

I also read this a handful of times and still am unsure what to make of it, though I will admit that the momentum and flow both worked out well and the scene played out flawlessly. However, the repetition of the rose - perhaps that could have been a stronger pull had you gone from bud to flower to rose kinda like the cycle of falling in or out of love while also diversifying your voice just a little.
