Lady Winter

by Meena Krish   Mar 6, 2018

With a delicate touch of her smooth finger
running water becomes crystal memories
her chiseled blue face widens with delight
as she blows kisses making barren trees quiver,

Humming an icy tune she walks this earth
soles of her feet powders the ground with flurries
glittering snowflakes create a spectacular sight
spreading chill among the living big and tiny,

An untamed sapphire grows in her frosty eyes
she extends her arms with bliss and chants
her cold breath brings an army of white knights
riding their wild horses wielding a great winter cry,

February is imprisoned within a frigid dungeon
hoping evening will escape this stormy moment
Lady Winter beams as her army raids the night
revealing a frozen morning of winter triumph.

This superb, beautifully written piece walks us through the frosty antics of a mischievous ice queen, taking carefree delight in wielding her powers to control the course of nature.
"February is imprisoned within a frigid dungeon"
This is the perfect line to sum up the feeling of being trapped by the winter freeze. :-) x

Lady Winter and her army, makes me wonder about the war that rages between humans and Mother Earth. I can't help but wonder, if Lady Winter has won the February battle, but is losing the war. Poems such as this that makes you feel deeply emotionally and mentally, makes me want to be the snowman as intended, because the alternative is a land of fire and death. You can dress me up if you like. Put a hat on me and shove raisins on my body. But in the end, it'll be a sad day when we can't make snowmans anymore. Someone should write a poem about the loneliness of a snowman, how much joy they bring yet the pain and sorrow of eventually being melted away. The anger and frustration of being built by the love and joy of the innocent just to be melted away by the methane and greenhouse gases of today's decision by governments and adults. It can get even darker by writing about the snowmans plea for Lady Winter and her help, the snowmans struggle with detachment with the physical world, bc if you are built by love and joy, why does it have to fade away? Don't we want love and joy to stay? When the snowman turns to water, the life of that water is resentment, horror, sadness and sorrow, the things that can't replenish the rainforest or water the plants. The things that lady winter cannot save. Anyway, if your Lady Winter had a voice, I would like it to be Ludovico einaudi's elegy of the arctic. We need more winter triumphs in this world to bring back balance. Thank you.

A great painting of words, the winter has no match in her time, her mood often wild and unpredictable. I loved this

I love this! It's so delicate and flows so beautifully. I've noticed that you adopted the 'abca' rhyme scheme on some stanzas and others not, yet both flowed so well.

    Beautiful poem, Meena.
