To My Wife on the Loss of Her Father

by Larry Chamberlin   Mar 19, 2018

Your world has changed irreparably
even if in a manner long anticipated;
the earth no longer bears the weight
of your beloved father’s gentle steps.

Life presents this cruel fate for all
that we must watch our parents age
then fade into the irretrievable past
while we travel on without their wisdom.

Know that without you those years
he spent wandering upon this globe
would have been far less kind or sweet:
accept gratitude for what you gave him.

Now it is your turn to age gracefully
so your own children will learn the way
and give them what they must have
to carry the lesson forward, ever on.

Lift your heart, this trail is not solitary;
just as we have explored new places
you still have my shoulder to lean on;
parents must leave, I am here to stay.

    Judging Comment - To My Wife on the Loss of Her Father by Larry Chamberlain points 10 - This is very beautifully and delicately written and moved me no end which I'm sure can be said for anyone else reading it. It is clear that you love your wife and will support her through this difficult time, it is also clear that you thought highly of your father in law. I would just like to take this opportunity to say you and your family are in my thoughts.

    Larry it's not often I comment on the things you write as others convey things far more eloquently than I. They say the things I would wish to far more gracefully too.

    As a family we are staring down this barrel. We some pretty hefty losses to come and they seem to gain speed faster than any wins that float our way.

    Give your lady a hug from us all and tell her she is not alone.

    Regards
