Hunting Season (Haiku String)

by Poet on the Piano   Mar 24, 2018

The cops are afraid
when Black men move a muscle
and cover their heads.

“Gun! He has a gun!”
so they shot him twenty times;
cellphones aren’t weapons.

Evil doesn’t change -
leaving Black men dead on streets,
a cop’s fantasy.

Father, grandson, friend
being Black is not a crime,
we will stay angry.

22 years old
unarmed, shot in his backyard.
Justice for Stephon.

-

While students speak against gun violence at the March for our Lives today, one must not forget the higher percentage rate at which unarmed Black men are killed. This is also a shout-out to all the Black kids who protested on Thursday on the streets in Sacramento, without support from big name celebrities. They are fighting for their lives. Rest in power, Stephon Clark.

Wow. First off, a Haiku string is a genius choice of yours. This poem speaks so much of the injustice in this world. I truly admire the topics you write about, by the way. Not anyone is brave enough to tackle issues like this in poetry.
    A wonderful piece. Write on!

Maryanne...I'm so proud of the young people who are standing up and finally saying 'enough is enough' my whole worry is that the older generation will never give up on the notion to arm themselves even more every time there is a shooting.

    Well said...
