Betrayal

by silvershoes   Mar 26, 2018

I find pain in the forgetting.

He’s lying on the rim of the tub,
but this time the tip of his tail has submerged itself in the water’s warmth and he hasn’t noticed.
I look up from my book, smile lovingly, and think:
Who does that remind me of?
When have I seen this before?

It hits me and my smile turns to heaving sobs, begging your forgiveness.

It was a different tub,
and a different orange boy.

Every time I read this, I get up and hug Baxter until he tries to run away from me.

Judging Comment - Betrayal by silvershoes points 7 - this is a powerful, saddening and thought provoking piece. With the title, at first, I thought this was possibly about a relationship being betrayed whether it be a friendship, a loving relationship or a family relationship then I read on come to realise it is in fact about a furry friend relationship and how we can move on when one of our pets dies yet we feel guilty for doing so as we know no other pet will come close to the previous one especially if it's our first pet….they are part of the family afterall. An interesting write

How beautiful, yet distressing. Wonderfully written. Well done.

A poem about the loss of a pet makes me tear up more than a poem about the loss of a human being does. These little creatures are just so beautiful and sincere and incredibly loyal that it hurts to even think something bad could happen to them. My dog is my antidepressant. No matter how bad my day is, I forget about it all when I come home to him, and I would definitely grieve for years if I ever lose him. Your poems about Milo are always touching. He had a wonderful life, with a tender owner like you.
