A freewrite for nobody.

by Poet on the Piano   Mar 30, 2018

I originally thought I would dedicate this to you, to her, to him, to them
but I can't express enough that this is meant for more than that.
It hurts to think that we're all trying so damn hard
yet we're still invisible to most of the world.
Too many of us are fighting for a useless cause.
Barriers remain barriers, borders close us in.
Demanding legislation takes precious, valuable time -
a luxury the vulnerable do not possess.

My friends grow nothing but pessimism in their
backyards and who could ever blame them?
Their roots have been cut off, manipulated by hope.
Hope runs out even if we know it has to flow toward something.
It's near impossible to find the source, to build our home
next to it, to become steady and sound by it.
Post after post is made, protest after protest organized
and we're still sinking. Our bones ache silently.
We try to command this nation to be something it's not,
to be great when we're not strong enough to harvest our seeds.
War is inevitable. People will always scream for guns.
For protection. For ownership of anything and everything.
So much never changes (the Earth has always been in chains).

We run out of breath until we exist off the fumes of a failed humanity,
our souls roaming between reality and fantasy.

We wanted so much more for ourselves...

    Judging comment:

Maryanne slams again with a deep piece of poetry in which hope and anger intertwine to stir the unspoken. About a nation sinking silently in its own deeds, and a struggle to sow optimism in arid minds. Each line is a seed for an independent poem, and there's not a single word that falls out of place, out of pace. (A suggestion: 'them' instead of they in the 1st sentence). Kudos to the poet.

Brilliant write! I just love how simple your language is yet you were able to say so much in those lines. I have a lot of favourite lines but my ultimate favourite are these:

"Their roots have been cut off, manipulated by hope.
Hope runs out even if we know it has to flow toward something."

This is a truly wonderful write that deserves to be read by many. I can actually hear it being performed in front of a crowd. It would add much more meaning to an already strong, meaningful write.

    Love it! Keep writing! :)
