Under the Sidewalk

by Larry Chamberlin   Jul 12, 2018

Underneath the sidewalk we cannot see
beneath the concrete is a mystery
things that crawl safe from the light
live secluded in this eternal night.

Bugs and slugs and slimy worms
muck and mire filth and germs
things that eat them in the gloom
in the faint green glow of a ‘shroom.

Walk lightly friends with your shoe
for gaps and holes lie under you
should the cement crack and give
you’ll find what evil there does live.

Snakes and toads are hunted down
by things with teeth that clamp down
with such force there is no escape
don’t be caught in this nightscape.

Nicely written poem with sinister depth...
