If

by Mortal Utopia   Jul 16, 2018

If
I say the light
that shines on me is illusory,
could you please tell me otherwise?

If
I confess to sins
that broke all those around me,
could you please tell me otherwise?

I know it’s unreasonable –
but if
I speak of being all alone because I deserved it,
could you please tell me otherwise?

If
I speak of you
as just my imaginary friend,
could you lie and tell me otherwise?

If
the world ended
and faded into shreds of memories,
could you lie and tell me

you would be there for me?

I felt the heartache in this poem, the earnest voice and that plea for support even when we doubt ourselves or feel like we don't deserve it. Emotional piece and the questions added that reflective touch, that even in our worst, we want someone to just grant us a little relief, even if they have to lie and say it will be okay.

An unusually compelling piece that speaks volumes beyond the questions. A sad lonely wistfulness runs throughout. Milly x
