Wannabe Hero

by CJ Maleney   Aug 27, 2018

I threw a rope around the moon,
I tried to prove my worth.
I failed in this endeavor
And it pulled me from the earth.

I held out my hands as a barrier,
I tried to hold the sea!
It washed me up in desert island
For it knew it was not for me.

I tried to hold the sun,
But it blistered up my hands.
It spoke and said "I am not for you,
For you are just a man"

I gave up on trinkets and trophies,
I stopped peeling away at my flesh.
And settled upon the thing I love so much,
That will cuddle up instead.

Sometimes we strive so hard,
We forget what is just and pure.
If you can accept each other for what you are
Then what you have is true.

Such a powerful, reflective piece. Whether it's proving something to ourselves, others, or collectively the world, we just have to accept who we are and what we can do in the moment. Sure, we can always grow and do better, but there comes a point where we need that awareness of our efforts. The truth is, sometimes we try so hard and things don't work out, or we're not heard. Will we let that weigh us down or will we understand growth takes time, that there are some things we can't have an effect on?

A very provoking piece and what stuck with me was the images you portrayed as well - a reminder of the forces of nature versus our humanity. Your title also made me think of the times we want to not just save ourselves, but others. Sometimes we don't have that power or influence and as a result, we feel hopeless. But we can only do so much at any given time...

Thank you for such an in depth critique and comment.

Your response probably made me think more than I did when writing it in the first place.

      Totally praised
