The Devil You Think You Know

by Saul   Sep 26, 2018

The lack of prey made It angrier as the pain in Its stomach was relentless and intense

And when It thought It would have to go hungry he heard a door open far way in the distance

It sprung Its long slender legs from Its hunting stance into a hunger inspired run through the trees

With inhuman predatory speed It reached the border of the thick forest with tremendous ease

With unearthly vision It peered through the dark and saw a little figure stepping out from the shack

It watched the youngling with light in hand walking among the night that was so cold and so black

The youngling continued to walk until he reached a smaller shelter with a crescent moon carved in its front side

It watched as the youngling fumbled with the latch on the door, finally opening it and quickly going inside

It explored and sniffed the air to make sure that the youngling’s protectors or that no one else was around

It skulked through the darkness quietly, Its clawed deformed feet supernaturally barely making any kind of sound

As It neared the door its claws effortlessly and without sound lifted the latch off its hook and threw open the door

The boy, still seated, was paralyzed with crippling fear and stared at the creature which he couldn’t ignore

It quickly reached out and wrapped one of Its clawed hands around the youngling’s torso lifting, him up into the air

The youngling finally broke from his paralysis and screamed loudly, It knew that It had to quickly get out of there

With speed and stealth, it reached the tree line and dove quickly into the forest and out of sight

And he heard sounds come from the shack and looked back to see the switching on of lights

It was too late for the youngling to be saved since the forest was enormous and there were lots of places to hide

Once It had hold of Its meal no one could catch It or find It though over the years many of humans have tried

The youngling tried to escape and finally passed out as Its grip squeezed most of the air out of the boy’s chest

It traveled a few more miles over rough terrain until It came to its feeding ground and Its place of rest

It lay the youngling on the ground and placed Its nose to his flesh and inhaled ever so deep

It caught the scent of fear, adrenalin and something else through Its mind began to creep

There was a scent, a familiar one, like a distant memory he had grown to abhor

Searching deep into his mind, this scent, it was something It had smelled before

As soon as It recognized the scent, It heard a loud roar bellow behind from a nearby spot

There stood about one hundred yards away, a human-like creature, eyes burning red hot

The human-like creature blurred as it flashed itself from where it was to standing right before It, an Incredulous sight

The intruder was shorter, but It knew that this human-like creature was much stronger and that It would win the fight

The intruder glared at It and then it looked toward the boy who was quiet and not moving

The intruder slowly turned his focused gaze toward It and It knew that this was Its ultimate undoing

Night birds and other nocturnal animals fled in fear as sounds of carnage filled the night that eventually would die down

The intruder went to the boy, lifted him up weaved around the flesh of the abductor that was now scattered across the ground

He disappeared deep in the shadows and into thick trees walking toward the direction of the shack

The boy stirred reached up his hand “Papa?”  “It’s okay Azmel.  You’re safe now.  I got you back.”
