Insomniacs Prayer

by Milly Hayward   Oct 8, 2018

Please Mr Sandman, come my way
before too dark the close of day
Spread on me sand upon my eyes
so I can sleep until sunrise

and then if bad dreams come to me
send an Angel to help me flee
Take care of me and keep me safe
from demon and soul eating wraith

For I have tried to count the sheep
but still I cannot get to sleep
My bodies screaming out fatigue
but rest is far beyond my league

My eyes are red my limbs are worn
head is aching now spirits torn
Mr Sandman please hear my plea
come here tonight and rescue me

Preaching to the choir with this one Mills.

Insomnia is a git. Don't know about anyone else but when it hits, thoughts flow and you become angry or upset and it just makes things worse.

Thanks Meena, It does get overwhelming sometimes. I've started plugging in my ear phones and listening to Harry Potter audio books and that seems to be helping. Take care Milly x

Insomnia is something I can relate to. I admit that normally it's through worry and not through pain. I can't really imagine what it's like to suffer this way. It must feel like hell. Everyone who would normally offer a kind word is aslrep. Minutes and hours move by slowly as you wait for the sun to rise.
Mr Sandman is one of my favourite songs, so using this to describe a serious topic helps to soften the tone.
    I enjoyed this. X

I really enjoyed this poem from you milly. The rhyming was well done and did not seem forced at all. This reads like a prayer for sure, and I know a lot of people do what they can to try and fall asleep, and this way seems to be the most comfortable for you to do.

Ah, The sandman is widely known as the one who helps people fall asleep, so I like the way you started this poem off, You want to fall asleep but you do not want it to become too late in the night to do so. You want to sleep long enough for you to feel rested and awake when sunrise comes.

If you have bad dreams you want an angel to come protect you no matter what. This tells me that sometimes you do have nightmares when you actually do fall asleep. I loved how you used the angels and demons and wraith here because you can feel the emotion and pain that you are feeling. You believe in angels and demons, so it ties all together well with the title. Your prayer, so including demons and angels makes since. I see the angel as being a metaphor for a pleasant dream and the demon as a nightmare.

I like how the poem swings a different direction here, because you are praying for anything to help you fall asleep, you are willing to try anything that comes to mind. You have tried counting sleep (another cliché), but it works well because anything could help at this point. Your body is fatigued so that tells me you have had very little sleep in the last few days, or perhaps none at all.

The imagery in the last line is really well done because you show a reality when a person does not get any sleep at all. As in the red eyes, the headache and the fatigue in general. I really liked the simplicity of this poem, because it speaks a truth for anyone who can relate to it. well done
