Comments : Think Before you Drive

This is such a powerful message milly, and a well written and rhymed one at that.

It's really difficult when you trust a person so much that you believe they are sober and in the end you end up in an accident. My heart breaks when reading this because so many people drink and drive and as you said don't think about what they are doing when they get behind the wheel. Nothing could take back that day when your life changed forever. It seems as if you were the one who was hurt the most by this, and who ever this other person is, is still hard to forgive. But you try to spin the hope around to them in saying that even though this happened to me, I hope you never do it to anyone else. Perhaps this will sober them up?

    Very sobering and sad piece.

Hi Jamie, Thank you for taking time to leave your comments. Very much appreciated as always. This piece was inspired by the time of year and also because I know of more than one person who's life has been destroyed by thoughtless drink drivers. We are coming into the seasons of dark nights and parties and I thought it might just help raise awareness or at least make someone stop and think.

Important piece to write, Milly, especially - as you say - considering the time of year.

    All the very best,

Thankyou Brenda. Most people are sensible and don't drink and drive but there are still thoughtless people who do and in doing so endanger other people. Milly x

A very important, and always necessary message. I remember how scary it was to realize a family member was under the influence and drove home. I was angry but mostly worried. My parents have always taught us to put aside any embarrassment or potential risk of getting in trouble, and call them if we drank too much. No matter if we were somewhere we shouldn't be.

I also think it can depend on the people you are with. It's not cliche or silly to have a designated driver. It's mature and smart to have a plan ready and to communicate this so no one feels like "oh I probably had too many drinks, but I'm not going to just wait."

I think it's awesome more cities have ubers and usually affordable ways to get home directly, and I can only hope people take a step back to realize how their actions have consequences. I think one main thing is self awareness, realizing and trusting your body enough to not push it and understand your limit. Even if we think we're fine, our ability to react can be impaired and we won't realize it until it's too late.

    Profound piece!

M.A. Thank you so much for your in-depth comment. . Drink driving is dangerous and irresponsible and quite often people either don't realise that they are over the limit or think that they can handle it that nothing is going to happen to them. They don't realise that their reactions will be slower and judgement impaired and may even get away with it but then eventually something will happen that results in tragedy. Thanks again Milly x

Milly, I'm glad this is nominated. It tells a sorry tale from a victim of how drinking and driving is wrong.
If this stops just one person becoming hurt or worse it's worth your effort. This deserves the highlight of thr front page
