The Canoe

by CJ Maleney   Oct 29, 2018

I'm going to buy one final boat,
And this one will have flare.
The ones I've smashed and broken before,
For those I have not care .

They were merely hollow vessels,
For me to play about and have some fun.
Perhaps to impart learning and skills at times.
Perhaps to teach how I begun!

The boat I will purchase on that day,
Will be a simple thing of wood.
It will be years before it floats again,
Because it isn't yet so good.

It will be ship shape and be polished,
Not one drop of water will it seep,
But when I decide that boat shall float,
I imagine some may weep.

It will be loaded up with wood and straw,
Then set aflame upon the sea.
It will not hold a precious cargo.

Just what remains of me!

At first I thought this was a mid-life crisis. What I did not expect was a final trip to that graveyard at sea.

    A nice surprising ending.

Nah I always canoe and kayak, I've done it for years and years.

But I've been offered a half finished wooden canoe at a very low price. (Bloke who started the project died) I have the skills to finish it although it will take some time.

Oh wow Craig! I was not expecting that ending. A proper viking burial! So cool!

      Thanks Bren.

Suppose it saves on ground space too. I'm sure some property developer somewhere is already thinking about how he can excavate a graveyard to build more houses.

Excellent, Craig. Another great ending from you, too.

What an ending it would be if I could somehow manage it lol

I liked this very much. Gentle rhyming with a sad ending. Creating the boat that will when you are ready take you to your final resting place. Milly x

      Hey up Mills

Glad you liked. This is how I want to go. I doubt in this day and age it's possible though.

I'm pretty sure some berk in a suit will have made it illegal.
