Those Flames That Flickered:

by Scott Cole   Oct 30, 2018

Candle flames are overexposed
And constantly under attack,
From those opposing adversaries
That don't support or have their backs.

Though their longevity is uncertain
Their sole purpose sparks their heart,
To fight off all those outside forces
That would rather see them depart.

For their every breath is labored
Their very presence set on fire,
And despite the forces against them
It never undermines their desire.

Their courage is battlefield tested
Their passion trustworthy and warm,
And once their service is needed
They will battle to weather any storm.

Their durability is against all odds
But they still fight tooth and nail,
To see that good triumphs over evil
And that their deployment never fails.

They are armed and slightly protected
Yet their livelihood is still at threat,
But they will keep on blazing forward
Cause their fiery hearts hold no regret.

But in the flicker of a heartbeat
Their livelihood can be snuffed out,
And everything they once stood for
Can so unexpectedly be doused.

So flame up all those lively candles
That memorialize all our fallen soldiers,
For together both shine even brighter
In those proudly eyes of the beholders.

Just a quick congrats to Scott who has 4 poems nominated this week. This was my favourite of his because of the message. I think it is important we never forget the sacrifice of all of our fallen. This is a cleverly written emotional piece that takes the simple analogy of a flickering candle and warms the heart as we read and remember those who fell. 4 points

An excellent piece that captures the essence of honour and the fight of light against darkness. The first stanza is a perfect introduction into a superb piece of prose. "A candle is overexposed and constantly under attack from all those outside adversaries who don't support or have their backs". Instantly sets the scene and introduces a compelling read that had me gripped from start to finish.
Great rhyming and visuals. Best wishes Milly x
