Make a Difference

by Milly Hayward   Dec 13, 2018

Little boy on the snow filled street
giving a smile to all you meet
with dirty face and threadbare coat
a tattered scarf around your throat

I see you huddled by the gate
cold and wet in a sorry state
you have no food or drink to warm
whilst hiding from that vicious storm

Christmas has come, good will to all
I see you stoop, then slip and fall
I truly hope we're not too late
to step up now and change your fate

Come here inside it's warm and dry
there's a warm bed for you to lie
Hot food and home waits here for you
its time you got the love your due

Across the world small children cry
without some help they'll surely die
Give them a thought at Christmas time
and do your best to end this crime

Donate your money or your time
to help those kids who need a dime
Make a difference with your life
Help make a change to end their strife

This poem was inspired by my experiences working with street children, where the smallest of kind gestures can help towards changing lives.
At Christmas so many children are excitedly waiting for Santa to call. The anticipation of plenty of food and toys. Yet sadly there are many children living on the streets or in terrible situations across the globe who will never know love or have any expectation of Christmas. One less box of chocolates or one less gift could feed such a child for a month.

A beautiful and touching write Milly. It's very sad to think how many kids go through this in the country we live in, let alone the rest of the world. I couldn't agree more with your Christmas message.

Thank you Walter. No matter how difficult or challenging our lives are there are always others who have a much tougher time and no more so than children. Milly x

Hi Brenda, thank you. Its a terrible thing for these kids to go through so much at such a young age. You would think that people would cherish and protect children not harm them. Take care Milly x

    Miss Milly,
A truly heart-felt piece, that reflects on the sad times around Christmas. The little ones that miss out, when all children should experience the same at this time of year.
A well rhymed piece that carries a powerful message.
    Much love
    M :)x
