A year to remember

by Dagmar Wilson   Dec 18, 2018

You can't teach what you don't know
narcissists don't care at all,
my heart is broken.

The road I've travelled
is not for them to know,
not yet, not later, possible never.

I'm not afraid to confess
there is a time and place for everything,
I'm slowly running out of breath.

Another year is coming to an end
we've seen, we've heard
watched lives fighting for their rights.
Tears are running down my face.

Reindeers dangle from the tree
multilights are playing my favorite song
"I be home for Christmas ".

The homeless are eager to start a fire
they've had their share of pain and suffer,
traffic is crazy, alleys are creepy.
Cancer is spreading, addicts are restless.

I am hanging on to life
holding my loved ones tied.

I thought the first three lines were disconnected from the whole piece, and it’s as if you wanted to write a different poem at the beginning. I’m glad you didn’t, because, this, in it’s simplicity, is really lovely and poignant. It doesn’t really step into metaphor, or abstract imagery too much.

    One slight thing:

"I be home for Christmas ".

The homeless are eager to start a fire
they've had their share of pain and suffer,‘

Shouldn’t it be ‘I’ll be home for Christmas’?

And ‘had their share of pain and suffering’ or ‘had their share of pain, and suffer’?

    A lovely write. :)

Strong words Dagmar. It is so true, this world is tipping and I don't know if it's going to be able to right itself.
