When things shine

by Mortal Utopia   Jan 10, 2019

Sometimes

I still cup my hands over my ears
to hear your tears fade and fly –
to evaporate,
or perhaps to encircle
the world like a song unsung.

I would close my eyes
as tightly as hands
and imagine

your tears (or whatever they are)

rising, shining, quivering -
to fall and wither like the breath
that follows your melody.

(I wonder why you never understood
how beautiful your songs were).

Some really pretty imagery here! I think it suffers in the second and third stanzas with the use of ‘whatever’ and ‘close my eyes tightly as hands’ sounds a little awkward. I can’t imagine it.

The final stanza is lovely, and demonstrates some nice verb use. :)
