I Remember

I remember.
All those mornings with you,
Cuddled under the covers being lazy.
Watching morning cartoons and waiting for dad to come home,
Your genuine light and love are becoming hazy.

I remember.
When a demon took you from me,
I don’t exactly remember the day.
Because it slowly seeped in and consumed you,
I always had blind hope it would go away.

I remember.
How the thoughts consumed me,
Of when I would see you next.
Would you be drunk, or would you be sober?
Either way I always felt hexed.

I remember.
All the times you told me you loved me,
With your fists buried in my chest.
Black and blue were the colors of you mother,
Hidden with clothing and a smile so suppressed.

I remember.
How you kept me from the world so scared,
God for bid if some man kidnapped or hurt me.
But four walls didn’t stop that man you placed in my life,
Or from you being an alcoholic devotee.

I remember.
All the countless efforts to stop you,
It only made things worse.
People I told, elaborate plans, or just being silent,
No one lifted me from this curse.

I remember.
When I thought there was no future for me,
At least not one that I wanted.
Fought for control as I watched blood drip from my wrists,
With pain and scars I was haunted.

I remember.
When I thought the demon would win,
Consume me like you into the darkness.
But my wretched past made me strong,
And I realized you are nothing but a carcass.
