Be True to Yourself

by Milly Hayward   Feb 18, 2019

When I was just a child
my mother said to me
hold your head up high girl
be smart as you can be

Be kind to all around
do all things that are good
make your own decisions
on what you think you should

Have faith in just yourself
aim high up to the moon
don't let things get you down
sing to your own life's tune

I've never been a sheep
instead I set the trend
different and I'm proud
yet shy I self depend

At school I was a swot
bullied but never caved
stuck by my own values
which never ever waved

Different can be lonely
but better than a sheep
mistakes you make are yours
and not another's leap

Through the years I've realised
folk rarely have your back
yourself you can depend
but seldom on a pack

To yourself stay most true
be kind to all around
if your soul is at peace
happiness will abound

Good family and friends
set life a happy tone
but when its time to die
your spirit leaves alone

I love the pantameter I once heard playing tennis without a net! That's how the non rythemic poems remind me of. Beautifully put!

Embracing ones true self and those special people around you is certainly worthy of note. I think today's generation struggle more with peer pressure. I hope your inspirational poem helps.
    Wonderful! Xx

Thank you Mr Darcy, I wrote it to be inspirational. There is far too much peer pressure on young people particularly with the social media. Take care Milly x
