The Adult Library Card

by Larry Chamberlin   Apr 22, 2019

The children’s section, when I was a child
served my sister as a babysitter for me
as, at four and five, paper words were real
while for spoken language I lacked the key.

It was in a sunken area with high windows
where picture books mingled on shelves
with adult format books meant to be heard
not read by the young children themselves.

Read them all regardless and I mean All
so at six I approached the upstairs matron
made a request that caused a bit of stir:
an adult card and so became a true patron.

When my faithful sister picked me up
she had to be directed up the stairs
and told at length of my bold actions
became known as the child who dares.

Larry, this is excellent. I have read this three times and what struck me primarily was how neatly you have blended the narrative with rhyme and how fluently each line blends in to the next. But also, you paint some lovely images with your words and I had to giggle when I reached the end. A charming poem.

    All the best
