A Soldier's Daughter

by Walter   Jun 19, 2019

I wrote to you again
But I still get no reply
I know you must be busy
So I won't question why

I don't know where you are
So long you've been away
And when you come to visit
I know that you can't stay

But mummy’s been upset
At night I hear her cry
When it's day she does her best
So that we all get by

This morning when I woke
I mark off another day
And now on my calendar
Just crosses to display

Then the doorbell rings
And I hear mummy scream
Because I just woke up
It still feels like a dream

I run down the stairs
See a man in uniform
And both of you are hugging
Makes me happy and so warm

But then I see your face
And know that it's not you
You're daddy’s best friend
And I see you crying too

I am so confused
That I try to look outside
But I can't see you there
And it makes me terrified

I begin to panic
While mum keeps crying no
I look at you for answers
But I think I already know

The man starts to tell me
That his squadron was attacked
Your daddy was so brave
But he won't be coming back

My heart begins to pound
And I don't know what to say
On my knees I start praying
That my dad comes back to stay

I don't understand
What all this fighting’s for
Why do people kill
Then blame it on a war?

This story was so simple and yet so very sad from a little girl's point of view. I really did get involved in the story and although I stumbled on one line which I have left below, in general, it was a sad but, well written verse.

"So long you've been gone away"...gone just seems to interrupts the flow for me so maybe drop the 'gone' or change it to..'just that you've gone away'

It has been nominated already so...good luck with it :)

Thank you Hellon and yes, reading back that line you pointed out does flow much better without the 'gone' and I have since changed it. I appreciate your comments and suggestions :)
A big thanks to Mark also for nominating.
