Mrs Fields

by Mortal Utopia   Jul 21, 2019

I saw Mrs Fields
reach for the sun with her eyes
almost closed. Then sigh.
Then cough. Then cough again and cry.
I never asked why when I heard her wail
like the sea. Perhaps tomorrow I’d pass by
again, I thought. But I never did.

There's something about this poem that made me think it was more than just some little old lady who you regret not checking on. Perhaps it was the name Mrs. Fields that made me think of mother nature, the earth and how we pollute it without much thought to the future..tomorrow you promise to be more vigilant in your habits but, alas you never do. Just my take on things :)

When brevity hits you in the gut like this, this moments you share with the reader, seeing a neighbor or (someone in the city or at a place you don't stop by often) and thinking of this person later. It reminds me of the times we see someone from our past, or someone we don't know too well, and we make a promise to keep in touch or check on them. But time passes and things in our life shift and then we may find out from a friend that's something has happened. Some tragic news. And it's like, why didn't we do more? Or ask in more detail how they were?

Such a painful moment you described but it made me think how human we are. We wish to do so much and put our thoughts into action... we can all be guilty of that, or just shocked that life comes and goes, and where were we?
