Dancing in the Dark

by Liv   Jul 28, 2019

I wasn’t interested in more;
In fact, I thought you were kind of a bore.
You pursued me and I kept my distance;
Secretly fighting some mysterious resistance.

It was push and pull for a while;
Until the day came where I gave into your smile.
Justifying my decision on the fact
That because she is married, you might not go back.

I wanted to believe that you were good, that it was right;
But you ran back to her every single night.
Feeding my mind with lies and manipulation,
And using sex to lock in my fascination.

Do I regret the day I gave into the temptation?
The truth is, it’s a bitter sweet situation.
For my demons were entertained for a while;
And in a few years I’ll be ahead by a mile.

In your ways, you are subtle and clever.
You see, you are the type of seducer
That evening come, I’m the only one forever
And the following morning, you are gone and it turns into never.

It would be a mistake to blame you for everything,
Because to look truthfully at the nature of our fling,
Our demons dance so perfectly together,
That if it wasn’t you, it would be another.

And so I take responsibility for my part,
For going back when we should have stayed apart.
But I needed your demons to feed mine
And they were hungry most of the time.

Never forgetting there is the word ‘me’ in ‘blame’,
If we continue it will be more of the same.
There were a few brief moments where the light shined through,
Where true love showed up at the secret rendez-vous.

I must not, however, over glorify such an instance,
Because reality will turn you into a riddance.
In the acceptance of my own stormy weather,
I wonder what my life would look like if our demons didn’t fit so nicely together.

    Liv, I'm guessing this isn't your first poem? I think this is stunning. So thought provoking, so stoic - something about it really resonates with me ... that feeding the demons.
    An excellent introduction of yourself to the site!
    Well done and nominated :-) x

    I think we can all relate to 'what-if's about our lives. Well-penned poem, the rhyme scheme was nice and the narration was nice. Hope to see more poems from you!
