Ouchies

by schmetterling   Sep 5, 2019

My little sister
looked at my thighs
and said,
"You have a lot of ouchies."
She's four years old,
so she has no clue
what these "ouchies" are.
I'm so glad
that she doesn't
understand
because when you're four
you show everyone
your "ouchies".
A simple kiss
makes them better,
but when they're
self-inflicted
it's not the same.
Now they are hidden
because of the context
in which they
came from.
It will take
years to mend
these wounds
because they're
on the inside too.
My sister's innocence
is pure,
and her heart
is full.
I hope to be
like that again
some day.

Though it may take years, believe they can be mended. Those last few lines are full of hope yet heartbreaking because self-harm can take so much from us - it can make us rethink our self worth, it can make us carry shame as we grow older. But hopefully, some day, those scars will not burden us, will not bring us back to a time where we felt we lost parts of ourselves.

This was emotional to read, please keep writing!
