The Week of Everywhere and Nowhere

by Tanya Southey   Apr 20, 2020

We were everywhere
and now we’re nowhere

I went everywhere
and now I go nowhere

But daily I am everywhere
beamed into everyone’s homes;
all of us spliced on screens
across the globe in little squares

I used to wonder about belonging
but having travelled everywhere
I realised I belonged nowhere

And in the arc of the paradox
I found my home

And now travelling nowhere
I find that everywhere
is above me,
to the right,
to the left,
below my feet,
rising from my chest

Small steps forward;
ready to take us
somewhere.

    I ADORE the contrast of "everywhere" and "nowhere". The opening lines kind of had a Seuss-esque style to me. When you mentioned how you have traveled everywhere, yet still seek that belonging, only to realize that when you stay, you can find home and purpose everywhere. In the little things. In the hope of moving forward. It also made me think how we can go day-to-day and never realize what we take for granted. When we have the freedom and time and means to go anywhere, we may lose that wonder and awe. We may lose touch with how breathtaking other places can be. Then, when we're inside, you remind us of the spark of finding something new. Or loving something in a different way. Seeing it in a new light.

    Lovely piece, inspirational as usual, Tanya!

    Tanya, I truly love the way you write! Being home like we all are you discover this place you thought you knew but never really did. Wonderfully written- stay safe and be well-
