napowrimo: a light (day 23)

by prasanna   Apr 24, 2020

you cup soft breath in your palms,
offering it to the stars as an exchange
for their light – you think they lead
the loneliest lives, burning themselves
alive to keep others warm before
fading into obscurity. painting the skies
with one last broad brushstroke, or
imploding on themselves under the
weight of the burdens they carry.
you think that the stars would rather
experience life itself – the joys, the sorrow,
the overall uncertainty that it brings,
knowing they only exist for
themselves –

not others.

Such a strong opening line, as they say, (you had me at hello) in this piece! Also, this poem too embraces such wise statements,

    you think they lead
    the loneliest lives, burning themselves
    alive to keep others warm

^ i mean, WOW. And then the closing line, I agree with Kate, this does infact bring a sense of nostalgia ! It gave me goosebumps too. I can't get over the stars idea living lonely lives as pictured in the mind of your character. I love this poem a lot. I'm missing much it seems, these days, but glad I'm catching up with your poems on my weekend. Your imagery is something else Mark, always.

There’s something about this that feels very nostalgic to me. I can’t quite pinpoint it, though.

The person you’ve painted and their ideas have painted a very vivid picture in my mind. I can picture a moment which is crazy because that can be quite hard for me.

Between the visual and the description, the detail, the metaphors: I’m in love. I love this. Instant favorite.
