Smiling With My Eyes

by schmetterling   Apr 25, 2020

It feels really good
when people notice
that you're doing better.
Twice now
I've been told
that I look happier
than I used to.
My grandmother said,
"You never used to smile
when you were with him
and now I can see
the smile is in your eyes."
Well, Nana
I don't have to pretend
to smile anymore
because I actually
am happy.
I can't imagine
how she felt
as I sobbed my eyes out
on the fourth of July
because of the situation I was in.
A day that was supposed
to be fun
and spent with family
was ruined for me.
I bet you
she feels some peace of mind
knowing that
I am not in that state
any longer.
Many of my friends
have mentioned
that I look like
I have the light in my eyes
I used to have,
and my eyes well up
because they're right.
When I'm sad,
I can actually feel sad
without feeling like
a burden.
That moment passes
quicker than it used to.
This is what they meant
when they said
that it gets better.

Cheering for you! Those last lines were so touching. "it gets better" does not automatically mean sunshine and rainbows, just that we are able to deal with the sadness without wanting to hurt ourselves further. So happy you have that light and smile in your eyes, and that others have noticed it too. How beautiful. All the best to you :)

I think people often forget how their emotions can affect others. The people who love you see you in this sad and depressed state. And they, in turn, feel the same. And what a wonderful way to express concern and care, noting that someone looks bright, happy, alive.

I think you captured that very well.
