The Week of Love

by Tanya Southey   May 1, 2020

It was a grand gesture
to go to the store
and come back
with a single piece
of fruit

Among all the produce
stacked for purchase,
the one piece that
possessed
the right amount
of sunlight in its skin
and had warmth
and weight before
I placed it in the basket

The one piece that both
blushed
and knew its worth
and wasn’t afraid of being
consumed for all its value

And we sat
silent,
shared sunshine
on a rainy day,
and did not need
to speak of love.

This poem gave me such warmth! I loved how you described the piece of fruit like it was chosen, shown its worth, and it was happy to give itself up so you could enjoy every part of it. The closing lines of sitting silent yet being understood, not needing to convey in words what is already shared, well that is powerful. You took this moment and made it something so precious. My only suggestion would be to add a comma in the last stanza after "day", or add the comma and have it read "not needing to speak of love". It felt like it rushed to the end a bit too soon but that's just me!

Thanks for sharing this gem, Tanya! :)
