Maybe

by Kiko   May 9, 2020

Maybe I picked it up in some checkout line—
a Walgreens or a grocery store—
where overnight the shelves went bare,
and X’s sprouted from the floor.

Maybe I caught it from my neighbor,
who stuck his head too close to mine,
our faces both uncovered,
a faux pas then—now a crime.

Maybe I touched my own face too much,
scrubbed my hands not long enough,
and a viral-loaded Krakatoa
erupted in a cough.

Maybe I passed it to my friend
on that windy day in the park,
as the earth began to pull away
from its smooth and gentle arc.

And when all the curves are flat again,
and the world comes out to play,
and the watercolor sky is dripping blue,
maybe, we won’t wash it all away.

I watch the USA news with horror here in Australia. Just can't believe how blaze people seem to be there right now. You describe really well how you could have picked the virus up just about anywhere as the restrictions don't seem to me as strict as most other countries. I do hope this is not a personal experience but, if it is, I hope it's a mild case you have. I had to be tested at the beginning of March as I'd been overseas...thankfully the result came back negative but it was very scary waiting for the results.

So nice to see you back writing again Eric...I have missed you :)

Hellon, I got it early in March, and it took a month to recover. In fact, I'm still recovering. I'm glad you didn't get it.
      I've missed you, too.
